Leviathan Lookout - FS 31057

Trail Overview

This trail to Leviathan Lookout delivers a short but thrilling alpine adventure. From Highway 89, it climbs over 750 feet in just 1.5 miles, following a narrow dirt and sand road that's well-traveled but increasingly rocky. The ascent takes you through hillsides dotted with wildflowers and grants multiple opportunities to admire the expansive terrain. As you near the summit, the road narrows to 1.5 vehicle widths, and with two-way traffic and a few shelf road sections, cautious driving and courteous passing are key. A locked gate near the top means the final quarter mile must be hiked. But at the summit, you're rewarded with a stunning 360deg view of the surrounding mountains--a truly breathtaking spot, but avoid during thunderstorms.

Difficulty

This trail is bumpy with some embedded rocks and shelf sections. There is limited room at the locked gate to turn around; as a result, turning around for large vehicles or trailers can be very challenging.
