Inspiration Wash Road

Trail Overview

This very large and wide sandy wash is located within Anza Borrego State Park and is restricted to highway legal vehicles only. The trail continues on the north side of Highway 22, but was closed at the time. From Highway 22 going south, after mile 1.5, the wash gets narrower and starts winding back and forth between the mud walls, creating a more confined canyon experience. Always be cautious and consider not camping near a mud wall as they can collapse without any notice. There are a few off-camber and deep articulating hole sections near the end of the trail that demand careful navigation. The trail gets very narrow at the very end as well, squeezing down significantly. Please stay out of the closed spur trails and always be aware of weather conditions, staying out of washes when it's going to rain, as it can be perfectly clear where you are, but rain miles up the wash can create dangerous flash floods downstream.

Difficulty

The sandy wash requires four wheel drive and good tires, which are highly recommended, with airing down essential for maintaining traction in the deep sand. The off-camber sections and deep articulating holes near the end are technical obstacles requiring skilled driving. The narrow section at the very end creates tight quarters. The main safety consideration is flash flood potential in the wash environment, so weather awareness is critical.
