Green Valley Bypass (2N54) is a short but scenic forest road that links 3N16 (Holcomb Valley Road) with 2N13 (Snow Slide Road) in the San Bernardino National Forest. At just under 2 miles long, it's often used as a quick dirt connector, but it's more than just a shortcut -- the trail offers a quiet drive through thick pine forest, light elevation gain, and a peaceful atmosphere away from the busier Big Bear corridors. Starting from 3N16, the road climbs gradually with about 600 feet of elevation gain. The trail surface is generally well-maintained dirt, with only light ruts or shallow washouts depending on the season. In dry conditions, it's an easy 2/10, suitable for stock 4x4s and even some AWD vehicles. During or after storms, mud and snow can raise the challenge slightly, but it remains beginner-friendly overall. As you make your way toward Snow Slide, the trees open up in spots to reveal glimpses of the surrounding ridgelines. It's not as dramatic as the sweeping views found on 2N13, but it makes a nice, shaded transition before you climb higher into the bigger scenery. Because of its short length, most drivers pair 2N54 with Snow Slide (2N13) for views or use it as a dirt bypass to avoid pavement when connecting Holcomb Valley to Green Valley Lake.

The road surface is primarily packed dirt with occasional shallow ruts, small rocks, or light washboarding, depending on recent weather. Grades are mild, and the trail is wide enough for two vehicles to pass in most places. A stock 4x4 with moderate clearance will have no issues, and even some AWD crossovers can complete it in dry conditions. In winter or after storms, snow, ice, or mud may increase difficulty slightly, but it remains beginner-friendly. There are no technical obstacles, no tight switchbacks, and no risk of body damage under normal conditions.

The trail is beautiful this time of year with the fall colors and leaves on the trail. The shrubs were cut back just enough to get pin stripes in the dust on the vehicle but not in the paint. A wider vehicle would’ve had permanent pin stripping. About 70% of the trail has these thorny bushes. You can easily get stuck in one area with the wrong line, we did. We backed up and took another line and got through it fine. This is a fun trail to do if you’re not worried about pin stripping.
