Trail Overview

This 11-mile out-and-back trail climbs almost 1,300 feet and drops over 800 feet, starting and ending at Old Yosemite Coulterville Road. The sand and dirt surface varies from 1 to 2 vehicles wide throughout its length, lined with manzanita trees that create natural corridors along the route. Numerous downed trees and branches have been cut and pushed to the roadside but remain visible along the trail, evidence of ongoing maintenance efforts to keep the route passable. Many ruts of various sizes appear throughout the trail, all measuring under 18 inches in depth, combined with off-camber sections that become particularly challenging in very narrow sections along shelf roads. Overgrown vegetation, especially manzanita, encroaches on the trail in multiple areas and will most likely cause pinstripes on vehicles navigating through these tight sections. Several spur trails provide exploration opportunities, including Forest Service Roads 2S27A and 2S27B for those interested in additional adventure. A couple of mud hole spots with very deep ruts under 18 inches appear at 2.4 miles from the main spur trail, creating seasonal obstacles that may vary based on weather conditions. Before reaching spur trail FS 2S66, the route opens up to provide spectacular, wide-open views of the valley and mountains covered with trees across the valley, offering excellent scenic rewards. After passing the spur trail, the character changes dramatically as everything tightens up, creating more confined driving conditions for the remainder of the journey.

Difficulty

This trail receives a difficulty rating of 3, indicating easy conditions despite numerous technical challenges. The combination of ruts under 18 inches throughout the route, off-camber sections in narrow shelf road areas, overgrown manzanita causing inevitable pinstriping, mud holes with deep ruts, and the transition from open terrain to tight confined sections creates consistent technical demands that require careful navigation and acceptance of vegetation contact despite the easy rating classification.
