Trail Overview

This is a short connector trail from the Sierra Buttes parking area to the Packer Lake Saddle. It weaves along the hilltop with open views, including a fantastic view towards the Sierra Butte and fire tower and surrounding mountains. The trail is generally pretty easy, just gradually cutting across the hillside. There are small loose rocks in the trail, and it is lined with big boulders at times, including one spot where you have to ride over a rounded boulder face, but it's not overly difficult. It has big banked corners, some ruts and some brake bumps on the north end before it connects to the saddle.

Difficulty

This is an easy rating because most of the trail is smooth and gradual. There are a few embedded rock faces and ruts to watch out for, but this trail is ideal for less experienced riders.

Access Description

The moto trails in the Tahoe National Forest northeast of Downieville, CA are best accessed from the Packer Lake Saddle or Sierra Buttes Trailhead on Gold Valley Road. It's a steep paved road with a couple dirt parking lots, not ideal for large trailers. Parking is tricky in the town of Downieville with no official staging area, so it's best accessed from the east side of the trail system. These trails are highly popular with mountain bikers as well.
