Trail Overview
Starting just north of Mammoth Mountain Resort's Main Lodge on Highway 203, this trail is a rugged adventure through sandy pumice and dusty terrain. The path winds beneath towering pines and crosses under the iconic Mammoth Mountain Via Ferrata. The trail drops over 360 in just 1.4 miles. The trail is marked with orange diamond signs on trees, guiding you through dips and steep drop-offs, including a particularly deep rutted area close to the east end. Be aware that this is an active mountain bike corridor as well, and heavy equipment could be traveling in the area due to construction, so stay alert and courteous.
Difficulty
This trail demands a high clearance vehicle and recommends 4x4 capability due to the sandy, uneven surface and technical features like whoops and tree root obstacles. Drivers should be prepared for narrow, dusty conditions and steep drop-offs, which require steady control and off-road experience. The trail's challenging terrain and heavy multi-use traffic make it a rewarding experience for intermediate to advanced off-road enthusiasts seeking both scenic views and a physical driving test.
