Trail Overview

This 4.6-mile forest connector is the definition of a "Sunday drive" in the woods--easy, breezy, and scenic. Francis Junction serves as a vital artery connecting two sections of Central Camp Road (FS 6S042), offering a smooth and surprisingly fast transit through a beautiful, healthy mixed-conifer forest. The trail is characterized by its mixed tread surface, which keeps things interesting by alternating between sections of fresh gravel, smooth natural dirt, and patches of broken, aging pavement. The road is wide enough for two vehicles to pass easily in most spots and winds gently through towering pines and firs, providing deep shade and a relaxing atmosphere. It's a perfect route for accessing the popular Whiskers Campground or dropping a shuttle vehicle for the nearby 007 MTB Trail descent. Be on the lookout for bicycling traffic on both Francis Junction and Central Camp roads. This is a popular route for the gravel bike and bikepacking crowd.

Difficulty

While the road is wide and generally smooth, the mixed surface conditions warrant a Rating 2 rather than a 1. The sections of broken pavement often hide sharp-edged potholes that can be jarring if hit at speed. Additionally, transitions between the fresh gravel and natural dirt can change traction abruptly. However, there are no technical obstacles, steep grades, or clearance issues. It is essentially a dirt highway suitable for all high-clearance passenger vehicles, including crossovers and stock SUVs. 4WD is not required when dry.
