Trail Overview
Forest Service Road 3S121A is a narrow and challenging shelf road trail that winds tightly along the hillsides just wide enough for a single vehicle. The trail gains over 300 feet of elevation before quickly descending 200 feet, all within just 1.5 miles, offering short, steep climbs and descents that keep drivers on their toes. The route hugs a shelf with dramatic drops into the valley below and glimpses of the Eastern Sierra mountains through breaks in the trees. The trail surface is sandy and dusty, and its rugged condition is worsened by off-camber ruts, small whoops, and fallen trees--one large tree partially blocks the route but can be carefully bypassed. However, wider vehicles may struggle to clear both the tree and the narrow ledges, especially with low-hanging branches in several areas. There are a few opportunities for dispersed camping, but be prepared for a tight squeeze in and out. This trail offers a short but intense off-road experience with scenic rewards and technical features packed into every quarter-mile.

Difficulty
This trail demands attention and capable equipment. The narrow width, steep elevation changes, and off-camber shelf road sections make it unsuitable for stock SUVs or novice drivers. 4WD and high clearance are absolutely required, especially due to deep ruts, sandy traction zones, and obstacles like fallen trees and tight tree corridors. The trail is manageable in a properly equipped rig, but the margin for error is slim, particularly for wider or taller vehicles navigating the ledges or low branches. Proceed with caution and be ready for pinstripes.
