Trail Overview

Dove Springs Canyon Road is a solid pick for offroaders looking for an easy-to-moderate trail that blends desert scenery with diverse terrain. Running from Dove Springs to Kelso Valley Road, this route is especially popular among high-clearance 4WDs seeking access to the heart of California's BLM-managed Jawbone-Dove Springs area. The trail surface is a mix of packed dirt and sand, with sections of rock, whoops, and the occasional rut; nothing too gnarly for a capable rig and driver. Conditions can shift fast after rain, turning some stretches muddy or even washed out, so weather awareness is key. Dove Springs Canyon Road stays open year-round, but summer heat can be brutal, and there's little to no shade along the way. Legal OHV use is allowed on marked routes, with the adjacent open riding area giving more freedom to non-street-legal vehicles. Be alert for fast-moving traffic on intersecting trails and expect limited cell signal--GPS or satellite comms are a smart backup. Veterans of this trail know that the whoops can sneak up fast if you're moving too quick, and sand in the lower sections can be deceptively soft. Air down early if you're driving a full-size rig.

Difficulty

4/10 in rutted areas, 2-3/10 elsewhere. Most of the route rates 2 or 3 with manageable challenges, but rutted areas jump the rating to 4 with serious obstacles demanding high clearance and skilled navigation. The thousand-foot climb and descent create sustained grades. Fine beach-like sand requires momentum management throughout. The shelf road section on the west side creates exposure descending the canyon. Four wheel drive handles the climbs, descents, and sandy conditions, while high clearance becomes essential in those rutted sections, earning the 4 rating.
