Trail Overview

Central Camp (FS 6S042) is the bustling, dusty artery of the Bass Lake high country. This wide two-lane dirt road serves as a critical link, climbing steadily from Malum Ridge Road on the east side of Bass Lake, passing through the historic (and still active) residential community of Central Camp, and eventually connecting you to the paved scenic byway of Beasore Road (FS 5S07). It's a road with many personalities: you'll share the track with trucks shuttling downhill mountain bikers to the top of the famous 007 Trail, gravel cyclists grinding out a climb away from the pavement, and explorers heading further up toward the Shuteye Peak Lookout Tower. The drive itself is scenic and generally smooth, winding through dense mixed-conifer forest and past several developed campgrounds like Gaggs and Whiskers. It's the perfect, easy-going backbone for a weekend of multi-sport adventure.

Difficulty

While the surface of Central Camp is largely a wide, graded dirt road suitable for most vehicles, it earns a Rating 2 due to the nature of the drive. The route features significant elevation gain with switchbacks that require attention, especially given the two-way traffic. The road can develop occasional ruts or washboarding from heavy use, particularly during the dry summer months. The biggest "obstacle" here is often other users--shuttle vehicles and cyclists--meaning you need to drive defensively and keep your speed in check around blind corners. It's an easy drive for a 4x4, but not a mindless one.
