Trail Overview

Climb along the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and explore side roads into the John Muir Wilderness. Buttermilk Road may have some traffic heading to a popular climbing area. Camping allowed on marked national forest roads, but not on Los Angeles city land. Green-sticker vehicles will also find many routes to explore.

Easy: Variety of dirt roads ranging from smooth gravel to narrow, rocky two-tracks. Challenging, optional side trips on network of marked forest roads (see MVUM). Main route suitable for stock, 4WD, high-clearance SUVs.

Access Description

From Highway 395 in Bishop, head west on Highway 168 (West Line Street). After 7.3 miles, turn right on Buttermilk Road 07S01. Greensticker vehicles might consider running trail in reverse from Waypoint 08, as roads here are much narrower.
