Trail Overview

Starting and ending on Dove Springs Canyon Rd, this soft sand loop climbs almost a thousand feet and drops over a thousand feet in just over 5 miles, creating extreme elevation changes. One vehicle wide and narrow at times, the route threads through a narrow canyon lined with desert brush, Joshua trees, and seasonal blooming wildflowers. Really interesting large boulder rock formations punctuate the landscape, adding geological drama. Various high-angle off-camber sections appear throughout, while deep ruts plunge up to 24 inches. One critical spot combines a tight squeeze with high-angle off-camber positioning, then forces a transition on an angle up a hill with deep ruts, creating the crux that earns this trail its 5 rating.

Difficulty

This legitimately earns its extreme rating. There is one spot that starts with a very tight squeeze on a very high-angle off-camber section. Then it quickly angles to an uphill transition with very deep ruts, 18 to 24 inches. It is severe enough to stop some vehicles and possibly requires winching if the wrong line is taken. Deep ruts up to 24 inches throughout are already extreme, but that critical combination section is what truly defines this as expert-only terrain. Various high-angle off-camber sections throughout add relentless technical challenges. One vehicle width through a narrow canyon leaves zero recovery room. Only highly capable vehicles, high clearance, excellent articulation, and very experienced drivers should attempt. The thousand-foot climb and drop add more fun.
