Trail Overview

This sandy trail is one vehicle wide and lined with creosote bushes throughout. The surface alternates between hard-packed and soft sand, creating varying traction conditions. You'll encounter a lot of whoops and washboards, creating a bouncy, jarring ride. There are some ruts up to 12 inches scattered along the way. Fish Creek Mountain serves as the backdrop to the west, while Superstition Mountain is the backdrop to the north, providing dramatic scenery. There's a short section that rides in a mini canyon with 1 to 2 foot walls surrounded by dry brush that has lots of whoops, washboards, and softer sand. It eventually gets too narrow, and you have to pull out of the wash onto the open flat sand plateau, though narrower vehicles like side-by-sides could continue down that path as it comes out. This trail crosses BLM 343, BLM 340, BLM 075, BLM 009, and BLM 197, serving as a main north-to-south corridor. The trail ends abruptly before BLM 206 as it enters a limited-use area where you're not supposed to go off-trail. The trail ends at BLM 095 right before the railroad tracks.

Difficulty

This is an easy-to-moderate trail with the alternating hard-packed and soft sand requiring attention to traction and momentum. The lot of whoops and washboards create a very bumpy ride throughout. The ruts up to 12 inches require high clearance. The mini canyon section with softer sand and whoops is more challenging and gets too narrow for full-size vehicles, requiring an exit to the plateau. Side by sides can continue through. Respect the limited-use area boundaries before BLM 206.
