Trail Overview

Winding into Bird Spring Canyon, this soft sandy route runs just over one vehicle wide through terrain lined with desert brush, Joshua trees, and blooming wildflowers that intensify deeper in the canyon. Various established campsite areas appear identified by wood fencing providing designated staging. Great views showcase the southern Eastern Sierra Mountains and the El Paso Wilderness Mountains. The farther you penetrate the canyon, the more Joshua trees surround the trail, creating an increasingly dense forest. The trail runs adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail, where thousands of hikers journey from Mexico to Canada annually, terminating at the PCT crossing. You'll encounter whoops, small ruts, washboards, and deeper sand throughout.
