Trail Overview
This scenic sand and gravel trail begins at Big Springs Campground and serves as a well-traveled connector into some of the Eastern Sierra's most iconic destinations, including Indiana Summit Natural Area, Bald Mountain Lookout, Alpers Canyon, and Clark's Canyon. Marked by an orange diamond with an "A," the trail is generally two vehicles wide and has been graded in the past--though don't let that fool you. Hidden dips, washboard sections, and rutted shelf road segments add variety and challenge. As the trail gently climbs in elevation, it weaves through a dense pine forest and rewards travelers with stunning views of the Eastern Sierra and the vast valley below. Several spur trails break off along the way, offering countless options for extended exploration or dispersed camping. While the path itself is mostly composed of sand and gravel, the ride is bouncy, and airing down is recommended for improved comfort and traction. Be alert for sudden dips and uneven terrain, as well as ruts on shelf sections that could catch you off guard. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to fishing opportunities on the river and rock climbing at Clark's Canyon, just a short drive away.

Difficulty
This is an easy-to-moderate trail suitable for high-clearance vehicles and beginner off-roaders, but it comes with a few technical considerations. The road has occasional washboards, ruts, and dips, especially where older trails once crossed. The shelf road section requires attention and a slower pace, particularly after rain. While 4WD is not strictly necessary, it is recommended for comfort and safety, especially when exploring side trails or navigating uneven terrain.
