Trail Overview

Big Sandy (FS 6S007) is a diverse and dynamic journey that evolves with every mile. Starting near Fish Camp, the route begins as a well-maintained road that hugs the riverbank, initially guiding you through the stark, regenerating landscape of the 2017 Railroad Fire burn zone. As you push deeper, the scars fade, and the trail envelops you in a lush, recovered forest canopy. It's a road of many textures, transitioning from smooth, graded dirt to a classic two-track adventure. Along the way, you'll encounter multiple water crossings that add a splash of excitement--and an opportunity to cool off in the numerous swimming holes found near the dispersed campsites. The route is anchored by the established Big Sandy Campground in the middle, but the real fun lies beyond: the trail continues past the campground, culminating in a longer water crossing with a tricky step-up exit that serves as the final exam for your suspension.

Difficulty

While the majority of this road is a straightforward, well-maintained Rating 1 drive suitable for most SUVs, it earns a Rating 2 due to the specific obstacles found in the latter half. The trail features multiple water crossings, which always introduce a level of unpredictability and require traction management. The defining feature that bumps the rating is the longer water crossing beyond Big Sandy Campground, which includes a small step-up on the exit. This step-up can catch low-clearance vehicles or those with long overhangs, requiring a bit of momentum and careful line choice to avoid a bumper tap.
