Trail Overview
Big Creek Fire Road - North (FS 5S048) is the northern twin of a route severed by private property boundaries, but don't let the interruption stop you--this section is a prime gateway to the high country. This 2.8-mile dirt track acts as the primary launchpad for hikers and explorers aiming for the Star Lakes Trail (FS 22E203), the Dutchman Lake hiking trail, and the rugged slopes of Mount Raymond. The road itself is a straightforward forest cruise, featuring a surface of packed dirt with just enough embedded rock to keep your tires honest. While the route technically traverses sections of privately owned land, the main forest road easement remains clear and open for travel--just be sure to respect the numerous "Private Property" signs marking the spur roads and stay on the main stem. The drive is serene and shaded, winding through a healthy mix of pines before terminating peacefully at a lovely dispersed campsite in a meadow, offering a quiet finale to a short, purposeful drive.

Difficulty
This trail earns a Rating 2 because it offers a slightly rougher experience than a graded gravel highway. The surface is primarily natural dirt, but you will encounter sections of embedded rock and small bumps that require a bit more suspension work than a passenger car might enjoy. There are no technical obstacles requiring 4-Low, but the unpaved, uneven nature of the track--combined with the need to navigate through private property easements--keeps it from being a mindless Rating 1 cruise. A stock high-clearance SUV or truck is the perfect tool for this job.
