Trail Overview
Bald Mountain (FS 26E219) is the crown jewel of the area, a legendary "two-track" trail that serves up a perfect cocktail of high Sierra granite terrain. The route climbs steadily from the Green Gate toward the summit, offering a dynamic surface mix of loose dirt, decomposed granite (DG), and grippy granite slabs. This isn't just a drive; it's a playground. The trail is famous for its optional obstacles like "Hollywood Hill," "V-Notch," and "Slick Boulder," where drivers can test their flex and traction or simply watch the show. Don't worry if you aren't ready to rock crawl--almost every major obstacle has a bypass. The destination is the historic Bald Mountain Fire Lookout, a beloved spot saved and restored by local clubs (shout out to the late Clay Weed and crew!). It's the perfect place for a summit BBQ, a "poser shot" with the lake in the background, and soaking in the iconic valley views. According to local lore, this is often the only entrance left open for winter snow wheeling.

Difficulty
This trail earns a solid Rating 4 due to the presence of significant rock obstacles and ledges scattered along the route. While granite offers excellent traction, the climbs over features like Hollywood Hill and Slick Boulder require high clearance, good departure angles, and suspension lift to navigate without body damage. Although bypasses exist for the hardest spots, the general character of the trail involves climbing up and over rock shelves that stock vehicles will struggle with. It is a technical trail that rewards a capable rig and a steady line.
