Trail Overview

This is a short trail near the Crandall Peak system of trails, that winds through a dry and sparse pine forest. It goes through a dry and grassy hillside on a section of trail that has more loose rock and jagged embedded rock layers. It goes past a strange metal shack on the hillside too, and has views out towards the distant mountains. It climbs up through the loose rock on the sun-exposed hill, climbing into scrub oak and back into the forest. There's a giant tree that has fallen and blocked the path, but an official reroute has been made to wind around it and reconnect to the trail. On the north end it pops out into an area that has been heavily logged, with huge burn piles. It ends on FS 4N89A, which connects to the Crandall Campground. This trail is seasonally closed 12/16 - 4/14 to motorized use.

Access Description

This trail system in the Stanislaus National Forest can be accessed from either the Deer Creek Staging Area on the west side of the trail system, or from Crandall Campground on the east side of the trail system. The Deer Creek Staging Area is a primitive dirt lot with space for several vehicles and small trailers, accessed via Italian Bar Road. The Crandall OHV Parking and Camping Area has several primitive camp spots with picnic tables. All of the trails are open from April 15 to December 15, but it gets really hot and dry in the summer here, so the best times to visit are spring and fall.
