Pakoon Basin BLM Airstrip

Trail Overview

Starting at the four-way intersection, head east on BLM 101/Cottonwood Ridge. This trail will run next to the Cottonwood wash, with mountains on both sides that are full of black boulders and a mix of red-rock areas. Continue on trail BLM 1027/Wayne Well. From here, you can head north on the Big Hole trail or stay on 1027 until you reach Pakoon Airstrip Road. If you stay straight, you will find a cattle gate that you go through and close behind you. As a reminder, please leave all cattle gates the same way you find them. After you go through the gate, you will be on the runway, so the trail will be straight and flat. You will see the airstrip buildings, water tanks, and two large carports. There are no restrooms available here or access to any buildings, but you can pull under the carports to get out of the sun. The main building is built with southwestern architecture and does have cameras, so please be respectful and pack out your trash. When leaving the airstrip head north on Big Hole trail, which is named for the very large canyon that runs alongside it. This trail will bring you back to 1027/Wayne Well and the way you came in.

History

The Airstrip is in the secluded Pakoon Basin of Mohave County Arizona. The BLM oversees this airstrip and serves as a crucial base for fire watch teams in the Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument.
