Trail Overview

This track takes you north out of Quartzsite, Arizona, across the desert to the amazing Painted Mountains and canyons surrounding Mesquite Mountain. You will be on the reservation of the Colorado River Indian Tribe (CRIT) and you will need a CRIT sticker. They're $25/year and allow access to all the trails on the CRIT. They're available for purchase in Parker, Arizona, at the CRIT office. Riding on the reservation without the sticker can result in the tribe confiscating your machine for keeps--not worth the risk. This is a 76-mile loop taking you 3,000 feet above the valley floor, with detours into several canyons and opportunities to play on the sand hill climb. If you want to skip the hill climb, don't take the little dog leg in the southwest corner of the loop. The views are amazing, and you may get to see some wild horses, wild donkeys and burros, coyotes, and big horn sheep. Of course, rattlesnakes are a possibility out here, so be alert whenever enjoying the desert. Desert driftwood and cactus are plentiful, as may be scorpions and tarantulas. Bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and bring snacks or lunch for a picnic in one of the canyons or up on top.

Difficulty

Washes and desert trails are affected by recent rains so they're subject to change. The sand hill is a fun challenge. The canyons have some tight turns, but a 75-inch SXS fits easily. It's mostly an easy ride with lots of scenery and views.
