Trail Overview
FH1029 is a loop trail on the north side of the system and begins at the end of FH1046. You can run the loop in either direction. Shortly after starting, you'll reach a cow corral with an optional obstacle. The main line includes a rutted, off-camber section. If you prefer to bypass it, turn right just before the cows and drop into the wash to avoid the obstacle. Continuing on, the trail eventually dead-ends at Private Property if you stay left at the Y later on. However, to complete the full loop: After passing the cows, you'll come to a Y intersection. Take the hard right to complete the loop and return to FH1029. If you instead take the left at the Y, the trail continues toward Private Property and connects with FH1028, which leads to the next section of trails heading toward the Fishhooks and bordering the San Carlos Reservation. The trail officially ends just past the last gate at the Private Property boundary. Surface: Gravel and dirt Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, depending on conditions. Vehicle Recommendation: High-clearance 2WD in normal dry conditions. Full-size vehicles: No major issues in normal conditions. The trail runs along a ridge, with rocks that gradually get slightly larger but remain non-technical. There are steep climbs and descents, some shelf road sections on the northeast side, and occasional washouts, especially on the north side transitions--watch your turns. Running the loop north offers beautiful views of McKinney Mountain, known for its striking red jagged rock face to the north. The northeast side of the loop is lined with impressive saguaros, and the desert here is surprisingly green and lush. Scenic camp ring with a view of McKinney Mountain, Wildlife sightings are common during elevation transitions, and expansive mountain views along the north ridge. This is an excellent sightseeing connector trail--perfect for a relaxed run with a lunch or dinner camp overlooking the mountains. Primary entry into this trail system is off River Road onto FH1028, which connects you to FH1029 and surrounding routes, including FH1001 for the next section of trails.
