Trail Overview
Lower Purches Creek Trail is a seasonal route that transforms dramatically throughout the year. In the summer, the trail turns into a swamp, making it extremely difficult to navigate. During the winter, the swamp freezes over, but heavy snow makes it just as challenging. This trail offers limited or no cell service, so be prepared to disconnect from the world. The trail begins near the trailhead, where there's a designated staging area with plenty of space for trucks and trailers. There's no bathroom along the route, so plan accordingly. Campers can set up at the trailhead or along the road. A few years ago, a beetle infestation destroyed much of the forest, leaving behind a stark, open landscape. As you travel, be aware that this trail is shared by others, including snowmachines, 4x4 vehicles, motorcycles, hikers, and more, so caution is needed. Keep an eye out for other users to stay safe. From the forested areas to the crossing of Purches Creek, and up to the Motor Musher's Cabin, this trail offers beautiful, remote views, but it's not for the faint of heart. Be ready for a rugged adventure.

Difficulty
Lower Purches Creek Trail is a seasonal route that changes drastically with the seasons. In the summer, the trail becomes a swamp, with large mud holes and marshland making it extremely difficult to navigate. Crossing Purches Creek isn't particularly challenging at the trail crossing, though the depth can vary depending on the time of year, averaging around 3 feet deep. In winter, the trail is mostly inaccessible to off-road vehicles and is primarily used by snowmachines. With low snowfall, the trail starts off at about a difficulty level of 4, but as you climb in elevation, it increases to about a 7. The hills become steeper, and the snow deepens, making for a much more challenging experience.
