Trail Overview

Gravel Landing is a scenic access point located within the Perdido River Wildlife Management Area along the Alabama-Florida border. The route to the landing follows a well-maintained gravel single-lane road that winds through pine forest and lowland habitat typical of the region. The trail is generally easy to navigate and suitable for most high-clearance vehicles in normal conditions. Along the route, drivers will encounter several shallow water crossings that add a bit of adventure but are typically manageable unless recent rains have raised water levels. Passing areas and turnouts are spaced along the road, allowing vehicles traveling in opposite directions to safely pass. Gravel Landing serves as a gateway to several outdoor opportunities within the WMA. From the landing area, visitors can access the Granny Jones Trail as well as the Perdido River Hiking Trail. Both trails provide opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the diverse ecosystems along the Perdido River corridor. The landing itself also functions as a river access point, making it a popular spot for launching kayaks or canoes for trips along the Perdido River. Visitors should be prepared for limited cell service within the wildlife management area and should check weather conditions before traveling, as heavy rain can make sections of the road muddy and increase water levels at the crossings. Overall, Gravel Landing offers a quiet and scenic off-road drive with access to hiking trails and river recreation, making it a great destination for those looking to explore the backcountry of the Perdido River Wildlife Management Area.
