Trail Overview
Sendero Cerro El Colorado begins with a two-mile stretch cutting through the remains of an old surface mine. The surface here is a rugged mix of hard-packed sand, dirt, and scattered rocks, requiring careful navigation through deep ruts. As you climb the hills of the old mining area, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding mountains -- a perfect backdrop for a quick stop and photo. Leaving the mine, the trail transitions into a two-mile section weaving around desert hills. This sandy stretch features deep ruts carved out during the recent Baja 250 race, particularly between Virtual Check Points 27 and 35. Expect tight turns, sudden dips, and shifting terrain that will test your focus and line choice. The final mile is where the true challenge lies. Rated a solid 5, this steep, off-camber, rocky ascent and descent demands precise driving skills, good clearance, and sure traction. The technical climb offers no easy lines, but conquering it delivers a satisfying finish to this challenging and scenic off-road adventure.

Difficulty
This trail starts moderately difficult and becomes increasingly technical toward the end. The first two sections across the old mine and sandy desert are manageable for high-clearance 4WD vehicles but require careful navigation through deep ruts, loose rocks, and uneven surfaces. Tire placement is important, and momentum management is key, especially in sandy areas disturbed by race traffic. The final mile of the trail significantly increases in difficulty. The steep, rocky climbs and descents demand low-range gearing, excellent traction, and driver experience. Expect loose rock shelves, sharp ledges, and tight off-camber turns that can challenge even well-equipped rigs. Lockers, aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires, and armor (such as rock sliders and skid plates) are highly recommended for this section. This trail is not recommended for stock SUVs or novice drivers. Spotting may be needed on the steepest sections.
