Trail Overview

The Roja Descent Trail carves through the breathtaking Roja Canyon Wash, where towering walls of multi-colored rock formations rise dramatically on both sides. Rich red and earthy brown hues create a stunning natural mural that shifts with the sunlight. The wide wash allows for multiple route choices, offering both flexibility and adventure. This segment, once part of the legendary Baja 250 (Checkpoint 136, Miles 220-225), plunges over 500 feet in elevation--from 1,274 feet to 767--in just over five miles. The path is predominantly sandy, with sections of deeper sand requiring attention and skillful navigation.

Difficulty

While the descent is not technically extreme, the combination of elevation drop, variable sandy conditions, and the potential for deep, loose sections poses a challenge. Drivers should be experienced in off-road sand navigation and prepared for route-finding across a broad wash. High-clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended.

History

The SCORE San Felipe 250, a 250-mile off-road race, was first held in 1982 and is sanctioned by SCORE International. The race takes place near San Felipe on the Baja California Peninsula. It is one of four races in the SCORE World Desert Championship series, which also includes the Baja 500, Baja 400, and Baja 1000. The San Felipe 250 is often referred to as the "Baby Baja". The race course has featured several legendary washes like Matomi, Huatomote, and Chanate over the years.
