Trail Overview
This route begins at Presa Iguajil and leads to the historic town of San Luis Gonzaga and its mission. The initial mile from the dam presents a slightly higher difficulty than the main access road, with some rocky, mildly steep sections where 4WD may be required. For a smoother option, travelers can backtrack to the nearby three-way intersection and head southeast--this alternate path rejoins the main route and is friendly for 2WD vehicles. From the point where the two routes merge, the road becomes smoother and more scenic, offering an enjoyable approach into San Luis Gonzaga. As you near the town, a striking grove of towering palm trees comes into view on the left, followed by the silhouettes of historic buildings on the horizon. The town itself is clean, peaceful, and picturesque--an ideal spot for photography or an overnight camp before continuing your journey.
