Trail Overview

This out-and-back trail delivers a rewarding mix of technical challenge and remote desert beauty, but it's not for the faint of heart or ill-prepared. The route begins with a demanding rock garden on a steep switchback that favors SXSs or small, high-clearance 4WD vehicles with experienced drivers behind the wheel. One particular corner in this section isn't especially difficult on the descent but presents a significant challenge on the return climb. There is no bypass, so scouting the 100-meter section on foot before dropping in is strongly advised for 4WD rigs. Beyond the obstacle, the terrain remains chunky but more manageable as the route crosses several shallow sand patches in the arroyo. Not long after, you'll reach a tidal estuary that can be impassable during high tides or after heavy storms, so checking conditions beforehand is crucial. Once across, the trail continues through the arroyo for about one to two miles, where large ruts and overgrowth may require minor trail work, including digging, stacking rocks, or cutting brush, especially for wider vehicles. Eventually, the trail cuts sharply to the right and enters a faster, smoother section winding through open mid-desert terrain. Wildlife tracks become more common than tire marks here, and the deeply recessed two-track hints at the route's past life as a Baja 1000 course. Ultimately, the road abruptly ends at a broad estuary, now impassable and severed from any further connection to the northern routes.

Difficulty

The first half mile is the toughest part of the route, with a steep, loose rock descent and one sharp corner that requires caution. Larger vehicles should walk it first. Getting back out demands a skilled driver, low tire pressure, 4X4, and high clearance. There is no alternate exit. The rest of the trail is easier, with a few sandy sections and one estero crossing that may hold water after storms.
