Strausburg Lane

Trail Overview

Strausburg Lane is a poorly maintained forest road that has gradually deteriorated into an easy-to-moderate trail. Numerous puddles and small water crossings are scattered along the route, some of which may have soft bottoms. Depending on recent rainfall, these crossings can range from shallow puddles to small mud pits, occasionally reaching depths of up to about 10 inches. A few moderately challenging hill climbs are also present along the trail, often consisting of loose sand, mud, or rutted sections that may require the use of 4WD in certain conditions. Additional minor challenges include a few low-hanging branches and some off-camber sections that can feel slightly uneasy but are generally manageable with careful driving. The trail intersects several other roads and hiking paths, providing plenty of opportunities for further exploration. About halfway through the route sits an old abandoned road grader that has been left there for many years, making for a unique photo opportunity and an interesting point of interest along the trail.

Difficulty

Strausburg Lane is one of the more difficult trails within the Sandhills Game Lands, largely due to its lack of maintenance and the variety of obstacles present. Water crossings, ruts, loose sand, and off-camber sections all contribute to the challenge. Rainfall can increase the difficulty by deepening water crossings and softening the trail surface; however, short dry spells can sometimes create even more difficult conditions as standing water turns into thick mud pits.
