Trail Overview
While FS 723 is located in the Talladega National Forest, it's also situated within the Oakmulgee Wildlife Management Area (WMA). During hunting season, be aware of and respectful toward hunters who will likely be in the area. Additionally, only road-legal, "plated" vehicles are allowed in this area. This is a maintained dirt road or a mix of dirt and gravel, and is typically one vehicle wide with room to pass. For the most part, it is very smooth with only a few tiny ruts. It is, however, rather hilly with gently meandering curves that flow up, down, and around hills throughout the woods. The northern end of the trail is generally steeper than the southern end. Normally, a 2x4 vehicle should be sufficient for this road. However, after a rain, some of the hills on the northern end can be quite slippery due to the red clay mud. During these conditions, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have 4WD or at least grippy tires. The trail travels through what would normally be fairly scenic hills. However, it's lined with pine trees, which tend to obscure the view throughout the year. Prescribed burns can take place from time to time, which may also diminish the scenic aspect. Cell service can be hit or miss, but it's generally decent. There aren't any stores for fuel or food anywhere within the national forest, but there are convenience stores in the surrounding towns.
