Trail Overview

Quarter Branch Road (FS 49352) is a mixed-use dirt and gravel trail in Jefferson National Forest, accessed from Forest Road 601 to the east. The trail is open to motorcycles from October 1 through April 1, so plan accordingly, as the trail transitions to horseback only beyond the motorized boundary. The rideable section covers approximately 2.1 miles before reaching that boundary. The trail begins at a gated entrance off FR 601 with a dispersed camp spot at the trailhead -- a flat gravel clearing with a fire ring, suitable for a small group. Be sure to leave no trace! It was clear that the site had been used before. From there, the surface is a mix of dirt and gravel, wider in sections and pinching down in others through rhododendron and mixed hardwood forest. Recently cleared debris from downed trees lines portions of the trail, and low-hanging branches are present in spots, so watch your head! The trail includes an off-camber shelf section with a noticeable drop-off to one side. The trail is suitable for both dirt bikes and narrower ATVs through most of the rideable section, though the tighter spots favor two wheels. Horseback riders and hikers share this corridor, so be alert and ride courteously. A disabled hunter access permit is required -- contact the Jefferson National Forest Mount Rogers Ranger District for current permit requirements before your visit. No other permits required. Expect limited cell service.

Difficulty

Quarter Branch Road is an approachable trail for most skill levels. The surface is a mix of dirt and gravel with enough width to find your line in most sections. The main things to watch for are the off-camber shelf stretch where the trail drops away to one side, low-hanging branches that require ducking in at least one spot, and loose debris from recently cleared downed trees along the edges. Nothing that will stop a confident beginner.
