Trail Overview

Covalli South leads to the southernmost undeveloped campsite in the area. Expect narrow trails with limited spots for oncoming traffic to pass. The trail features muddy, deep ruts and big mud holes to navigate. The end of the trail has several offshoots leading to designated Crown land camping areas. The campsites are located right on the banks of Lake Koocanusa. A couple of the offshoots to the camping areas are off-camber, but it's clear that campers, Sprinter vans, and RVs have made it through with careful line choices. There are a couple of little islands close to shore, easily accessible by paddleboard or kayak. There is no Verizon cell service in this area. To ensure you have consistent map coverage, please download your offline maps before exploring the area. Crown Land Camping: Canadian Crown land is open to Canadian residents for free camping. Out-of-country visitors, particularly from the US, will need to obtain a camping permit from the nearest FrontCounter BC office in Cranbrook before camping on Crown Land if camping outside of the paid campsite.

History

Covalli South, situated within the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area, leads to campsites along the shores of Lake Koocanusa. The lake, a prominent feature of the landscape, is a relatively recent creation, formed by the construction of the Libby Dam in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The flooding of the Kootenay River valley transformed the landscape. The lake has a recreational spot enjoyed by many, including the Ktunaxa. About the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area (KRMA): The KRMA was established to manage and enhance recreational opportunities in the Lake Koocanusa area while protecting natural resources. The KRMA encompasses a large area of Crown land and offers a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and off-roading.
