Trail Overview

This is a scenic and remote trail. Combined with some of the other local trails and attractions, this is a very nice ride. At the north end, there's access to the Clarion River, and to the south, it connects to two other forest roads in Clear Creek State Forest. There is a nice little dam on the Callen Run towards the north end, and the run is stocked with fish. It can be buggy during the summer, so bring your bug spray. The road itself is pretty well maintained. It's notable that, unlike many of the forest roads in this tract, this one does not have any motorized camping sites.

Difficulty

This trail is passable by any street-legal vehicle under dry conditions, with occasional potholes being the only notable obstacles.

History

Callen Run Road follows the course of an important historic logging railroad built in 1864 -- one of the first narrow-gauge railroads in the region. This rail line transported logs from southeastern Heath Township along Johns Run to sawmills at the mouth of Callen Run on the Clarion River. After the logging era, the abandoned rail corridor was converted to a vehicular road for access and management, now central to this forest tract.
