Trail Overview
This Turkey River backcountry trail is one of those hidden Iowa routes that most people would never notice unless someone local pointed them toward it. Used mainly by farmers, hunters during the fall season, and those looking for a quiet way to access the river, this Class 8 road offers a laid-back off-road drive through some of the most scenic stretches along the Turkey River near Elkader. The trail begins at a simple gravel intersection. Turning left leads toward primitive camping areas and a state DNR trout hatchery, but continuing straight starts the route itself. The road follows the edge of a field before reaching a sign marking the beginning of the Class 8 section. At first, the trail remains fairly tame. The surface transitions from gravel into loose sand as you approach the woods, and during dry stretches the sand can become soft in spots. While some vehicles may make it through in ideal conditions, this is where it becomes clear that a 4x4 is the smarter choice. After passing an isolated red barn and turning into the woods, the trail quickly changes character. The sandy road narrows into a rocky one-lane path descending toward the river. From here on, the Turkey River becomes a constant companion. In places, the trail runs within just a few feet of the water, making for incredible scenery but also unpredictable driving conditions. Because of the river's proximity, sections of the road stay damp long after rainfall. Mud, ruts, and slick surfaces are common, especially in shaded areas where sunlight rarely reaches the ground. Even after several dry days, portions of the trail can still catch drivers off guard, especially after storms or periods of heavy rain. One of the unexpected highlights of the trail comes during late June and early July, when wild blackberries grow thick along portions of the route. It is worth taking a break and grabbing a handful while listening to the sound of the river nearby. As the trail winds deeper through the woods, it alternates between rolling hills, muddy flats, and rocky stretches worn down by years of runoff and traffic. Drivers should expect occasional standing water depending on recent weather. Fallen trees are also common after storms due to erosion along the riverbank, so carrying a saw or being prepared to clear debris is never a bad idea. Wildlife is everywhere throughout the route. Deer frequently move through the woods near the river, while wild turkey, ducks, geese, and pheasants are common sights depending on the season. During hunting season, it is also common to encounter hunters using the trail to reach remote sections of land near the river. Partway through the drive, the trail crosses a small creek. Under normal conditions, the crossing is not particularly deep, but it can become more challenging after heavy rain. Leaving the wooded sections behind, the final stretch becomes noticeably muddier and more deeply rutted for roughly a mile and a half. This area contains several larger mud holes that can become the most challenging part of the drive when wet. In dry conditions, however, it remains a fun and scenic finish. Eventually, the trail opens back up near the river beside what locals refer to as the "10 Mile Bridge," named for its approximate distance from Elkader by water. This area serves as a popular launch point for canoes and kayaks and is an excellent place to relax after completing the trail. The route ends after crossing an old single-lane bridge over a small creek, bringing the drive to a quiet close. This trail is not about extreme rock crawling or technical obstacles. Instead, it is the kind of backroad adventure that encourages drivers to slow down and enjoy the outdoors. Between the river views, wildlife, mud, and remote atmosphere, it captures a side of Iowa that many people never get to experience.
