Trail Overview
Nicolai Mountain 4x4 Loop is the primary way to link all designated full-size vehicle trails in the Nicolai Mountain OHV Area, making it a strong option for intermediate drivers looking for a connected route with consistent elevation change and traction challenges. Starting at Shingle Mill Road on the southern end of Fall Line, the 8.5-mile loop climbs along the southern and eastern flanks of Nicolai Mountain on dirt and gravel surfaces that shift quickly with weather conditions. Fall Line features sustained grades with slick clay, shallow ruts, and occasional washouts that can force careful line choice and steady throttle control, especially on climbs. The route then transitions onto Plank Road, featuring tighter corners, off-camber sections, and limited sightlines through dense timber require controlled descents and attention to traffic, making this one of the more engaging 4x4 trails near Astoria Oregon. After descending Plank Road, the loop crosses Shingle Mill Road and continues onto Knob Hill Trail, linking into Knob Loop for a short out-and-back segment to the northeast before returning to the start. Knob Loop tends to hold the most moisture, with muddy stretches, standing water, and churned ruts that can become the most technical part of the route during the wet season, while drier months offer firmer but still uneven terrain. The entire route is open to street-legal 4x4 vehicles, with high clearance and low-range gearing recommended due to traction loss on climbs, braking control on descents, and narrow corridors with blind corners throughout. Active logging operations are common on or near Shingle Mill Road and connecting segments, and navigation requires attention at multiple signed junctions where the 4x4 routes intersect the broader OHV trail system.
