Trail Overview
Starting off Highway 14 within Red Rock Canyon State Park's restricted area, requiring staying on established trails, this sand and pumice route immediately starts climbing a sandy hill from the start. Surrounded by hills, desert brush, and Joshua trees throughout the journey. Part of the trail passes through a scenic canyon offering dramatic views of different rock and sand formations, creating spectacular geology displays. The route drops into and out of a few small washes as it navigates the terrain. Please be aware of birds of prey restrictions from February 1 to July 1 and observe closed area restriction signs protecting sensitive habitat. This is now an out-and-back trail. The original trail is closed.

Difficulty
Four Wheel Drive is recommended for the sandy hill climb at the start, and sand and pumice surface throughout. The drops into and out of small washes create manageable elevation changes. A sand and pumice combination requires momentum management, and airing down helps traction. Overall accessible State Park route with the main considerations being respecting restricted areas, staying on established trails, and observing the February 1 to July 1 seasonal closure for nesting birds of prey. The dramatic canyon views reward compliance with these restrictions.
