Trail Overview
The Old Culp Valley Road is a road that travels along the border of the Culp Valley Preserve in Anza Borrego State Park. The road is 4 miles from the trailhead to the junction of the Jasper Trail; although you can travel to the end, you will leave the Anza Borrego State Park and enter private property. There is a sign saying that the owners have the right to restrict access. You can exit the Old Culp Valley Road by turning right on the Jasper Trail, and that will take you back to the highway (State Route 22 or Montezuma Valley Road), or continue your journey by making a left turn on the Jasper Trail, then the Grapevine Canyon Trail to other locations, Angelino Spring or Yaqui Wells. The road is smooth on the sand and granite surface. The road starts at an elevation of 2952 feet and culminates at 4204 feet for a gain of 1264 feet. The area is scenic with views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and lots of granite rock formations. There are pullouts for stopping for lunch or just exploring on foot. Camping is allowed in marked locations only. No ground fires are allowed--you must use a metal fire container. Pack out all trash and waste.

History
Culp Valley, characterized by its cool mountain air, abundant water, and natural resources, offers a promising environment for a fulfilling life. Each year, the Cahuilla people returned to this picturesque valley. The scenic rock formations surrounding the area provided natural cover for storage and shelter. Numerous springs within the valley ensured a constant water supply. A sizable Cahuilla village once thrived in the valley's floor and fringes, indicating its vibrant community. A few Cahuilla dwellings persisted until the early 1900s. The valley's resources attracted not only the Cahuilla but also homesteaders, cattlemen, hunters, and modern campers. The Paroli family, consisting of Alfred Wilson and Ralph Jasper, homesteaded in the valley during the early 1900s. They engaged in cattle ranching and enjoyed the valley's abundant resources. Their names now adorn trails, springs, and peaks within the park.
