Trail Overview

Hot Springs Road (BLM206A) is widely considered the most reliable and straightforward route to the legendary Spencer Hot Springs. Branching off from Pete's Summit Road, this wide, hard-packed gravel lane provides a smooth journey across the Big Smoky Valley floor. Unlike many desert tracks that turn into impassable "gumbo" when wet, this route remains relatively firm, making the springs accessible nearly year-round. The trail carries you through a classic sagebrush and rabbitbrush landscape with the towering Toiyabe Range as your backdrop. Upon arrival at the springs, you'll find several natural pools featuring soft mud bottoms and authentic high-desert algae. A well-maintained wooden deck is available to keep your gear and towels dry while you soak. Water temperatures typically range from a relaxing 98degF to a therapeutic 104degF. This is an ideal destination for those looking to unwind after a long day on the more technical mountain trails. There are numerous dispersed campsites scattered throughout the area. Please do not camp directly at the springs; keep your camp at least 200 feet back to allow others access to the water and to protect the delicate riparian environment. This is a high-use area. Pack in, pack out everything you bring. Utilize existing fire rings and do not create new ones to help preserve the natural beauty of the valley. There is very little to no cell service at the hot springs. The vastness of the Big Smoky Valley often results in a signal dead zone. Download offline maps before leaving Austin.
