One of the highlighted trails in the area, this hard-pack sand route runs about 1.5 vehicles wide into Short Canyon. Climbing into the canyon reveals dramatic, beautiful views of Eastern Sierra Mountain peaks rising dramatically. Spring transforms this into a wildflower showcase with large patches of blooming displays creating spectacular color. Joshua trees even appear along this trail, unusual for the area. The trail turns more rocky near the end, where it terminates at a trailhead, with hiking access continuing into the canyon for those wanting to explore deeper on foot. The trail can get busy at times.

Difficulty
Hard-packed sand provides good traction and a stable surface for most of the route. The 1.5 vehicle width gives adequate navigation room. Turning more rocky near the end adds texture, but nothing technically demanding. The climbing into the canyon creates elevation gain without extreme grades. Overall, this rates as one of the more accessible highlighted trails, rewarding visitors with dramatic Eastern Sierra views and spring wildflowers without punishing difficulty. Any competent high clearance vehicle handles this showcase route.
