Trail Overview
SFR 442142 Trail is an exciting, short, and scenic bidirectional trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located near highway US-131 in South Boardman, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the south end of Branch Road Trail, you'll start on a bumpy, sandy, dirt two-track into the forest. 0.2 miles into the trail, you'll come upon a long, soft sand, rutted out hill climb cut into the side of the terrain. Coming down the hill is much easier with gravity helping. However, coming up this obstacle will require 4WD, some speed, and/or lower tire pressure for better traction. The ruts can get deep here, causing the obstacle to become more difficult. When you reach the top, you'll be greeted by an open cut field with views of the towering pine tree forest. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a very difficult trail at all, other than the sandy hill section, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The north end of the trail finishes at an unnamed dirt road that runs east and west. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's a fantastic route to explore with a lot of fun to be had! As always, again, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!

Difficulty
This Technical Rating & Difficulty was given a 3 due to the sandy, rutted out hill required to navigate through the trail. There is no bypass around this section. The rest of the trail could be rated as a 2 because it's typically only one vehicle wide with limited places to pass. Otherwise, it's an easy trail that could be rated as a 1.
