Trail Overview

Trail W174 is a dirt bike-only trail that has been partially widened near its northern entrance, likely due to unintentional use by SxSs, as it is not clearly marked for dirt bike only. The trail runs through dense, overgrown forest with decaying leaves and debris that can obscure rocks and roots. Though relatively free of major obstacles, it includes small embedded rock layers, steep climbs, and narrow shelf sections cut into the hillside. It gradually narrows along the route, with a boulder pinch point at the southern end to block wider vehicles.

Access Description

The official staging area for the Warrior Trail System is located in the city of War, with a 2-acre parking lot, a staffed facility, restrooms, and permit sales. Food, fuel, and lodging are available in the towns of War and Gary, WV. From the parking lot, riders can take the approved OHV highway connector along Main St. to the start of Trail 16. Permits can only be purchased from local vendors or at trailhead facilities, and are valid until December 31st of that year. Overnight camping is not allowed at the trailheads, but there are numerous RV resorts, hotels, and restaurants available in the nearby small towns. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System spans seven counties and ten trailheads in southern West Virginia through terrain rooted in the region's rich coal mining history.
