Trail Overview
Wedge Road-Emery CR405 is a 6.7-mile point-to-point trail rated 2 of 10 located within the San Rafael Swell. The road is gravel and is easily passable by cars leading to destination viewpoints known as The Little Grand Canyon Overlook and The Wedge Overlook. The trail is a wide two-lane maintained road that starts at Green River Cutoff (Emery CR401). This is also the location of the Buckhorn Wash Visitors Center which includes picnic areas and restrooms. The Wedge Overlook is one of the most scenic vistas in the state. It overlooks the San Rafael River as it flows through the "Little Grand Canyon". The San Rafael River is a combination of Ferron Creek, Cottonwood Creek, and Huntington Creek, which meet at a single point, and then continue to the Colorado River. There is no camping allowed along the canyon rim, but there are designated campsites 1 to 2 miles north of the rim. This trail ends at the "Little Grand Canyon Overlook." At this point, there are multiple overlooks along both the east and western trails. Located a little over one-half mile along the eastern trail is "The Wedge Overlook." This is an outcropping of rock that sticks out into the canyon. This narrow point of rock provides the best views of the canyon. Directly beneath the Overlook is a sheer drop off of 1,200 feet to the San Rafael River's deeply cut Little Grand Canyon. Panoramic vistas reveal the river winding its way through canyons of changing widths, surrounded by multi-layered cliffs, buttes, domes, and spires. The San Rafael Swell is an isolated desert environment, so come prepared. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, during the moderate temperatures. Summer temperatures can be hot and uncomfortable, and winter nights can be very cold. Be sure before you begin your venture, you have a full tank of gas, a spare tire, tools, plenty of provisions, and water for you and your family. There is no cell phone service in this area and the nearest services are located in Green River to the east or along Hwy 10 to the west.
