Trail Overview
Roller Coaster is a 1.1-mile point-to-point trail, high-intensity trail rated 9 of 10, located within the Sand Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Although short, the trails provide for steep climbs and big ledges with more than 900 feet of elevation change. Mostly slick rock, there is a sand wash transition between the two major sections. The trail starts out dropping down into a slick rock canyon with a 15-foot off-camber wall to tackle. This is just the warm-up; dropping off the ledge on the other side leads to the first major obstacle. First observed as a 10-foot-deep crack, follow it until the track marks are visible on the far wall. This is your access point to straddle the crack. Once you get off the crack, you will come to a 25-foot waterfall exit known as Datson Falls. Pick your line wisely, as more than one rig has tumbled back down. At this point, there is a sand wash transition as you round the corner to the west to enter the adjoining wash. Enjoy the calm, as the best is still ahead. After just a short distance, the trail arrives at John's Crac,k which again has to be straddled. There are several trickier waterfalls between 15 and 20 feet before reaching the final climb out. The final climb is about 150 feet of large steps to the left or the optional line to the right. In total, there are 13 major obstacles on this trail with optional lines rated at 10 or higher. Cellphone service is limited in the canyon but good on either rim. The nearest services are located in Hurricane.
