Trail Overview
Gillis Ranch is a long and scenic journey through one of the most remote and colorful sections of the San Rafael Desert, blending history, solitude, and classic desert driving. The route follows sandy and rocky two-track roads across rolling hills, open flats, and flood plains near the San Rafael River. Surface conditions change often, with stretches of soft sand, mild rocky climbs, shallow wash crossings, and occasional narrow ledges that may require four-wheel drive and steady momentum. One section features a tight switchback with sweeping views that feel more like Moab than the quiet desert surrounding you. Along the western end of the trail sits the historic Gillis Ranch, where three original log cabins still stand as reminders of the early settlers who carved out a life in this harsh landscape. The preserved structures offer a rare glimpse into frontier living far from modern conveniences. There is open ranching in the area, so keep your eyes open for free-roaming cows. Camping is limited, but a few open sandy areas may work for a primitive overnight stay.

Difficulty
Gillis Ranch is mostly a scenic desert route, but changing terrain keeps it from being fully easy. Expect soft sand, mild rocky hills, shallow wash areas, narrow ledges, and one tight switchback that requires careful driving. Most capable high-clearance 4x4s will handle it well in dry conditions, but sand or recent storms can raise the difficulty.
History
Gillis Ranch preserves remnants of early settlement life in an unforgiving desert environment. Three original log cabins still stand, offering a rare look at how ranchers and settlers lived and worked in this isolated region with limited water, harsh weather, and great distances from town.
