Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This spur is a 1.75-mile dead-end out-and-back route that leads to an east-facing rim with elevated views over the Colorado River and the tip of Dome Plateau known as Richard's Mountain. From the overlook, travelers can also spot Power Pole Rim and Pole Canyon Rim across the river, along with surrounding cliffs, mesas, and distant mountain scenery. The trail is considered moderate, but the obstacles are minor and make it a good option for beginners or stock high-clearance vehicles looking for a little challenge. Most of the route is only one vehicle wide, so passing opportunities are limited. As you near the end, thicker tree growth crowds the trail, making pinstriping likely. Small rocky patches along the route keep things interesting without becoming overly technical.

Difficulty

This trail has only minor rocky sections and is well-suited for beginners or stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Due to the rocky and uneven terrain, you will encounter rock ledges up to 12 inches tall in some spots, which can also cause your vehicle to become off-camber. The main challenges come from the narrow one-vehicle-wide track, limited passing room, and heavier tree growth near the end that can cause pinstriping. There are no major technical obstacles, but drivers should be comfortable with tight brush and light uneven terrain.

History

Dome Plateau sits within a region shaped by erosion, mining history, and early backcountry travel routes outside Moab. Today, the trail system is popular with off-road travelers looking to experience classic red rock scenery beyond the busier in-town trails.
