Trail Overview

Situated just off the incredibly scenic Highway 9, located east of the breathtaking Zion National Park, BLM 74 - West is a brief but highly rewarding 0.7-mile two-track dirt trail. This welcoming, flat route meanders gracefully through a classic, vibrant high-desert landscape dotted with fragrant sagebrush and scattered juniper trees. Right at the entrance, explorers will encounter an unlocked rustic ranch gate; it is imperative to practice good trail etiquette by securely closing this gate behind you as you enter and exit to protect the area. As you drive along the relatively smooth, red-dirt track, the path skirts alongside a beautiful rim edge, offering numerous premier, flat dispersed campsites perfectly suited for a quiet overnight stay with spectacular views of the surrounding Zion backcountry. Travelers should carefully note that this specific western segment of BLM 74 is physically separated from the BLM 74 East trail by a deep, impassable old washout situated in a steep central gulley, meaning this route acts as a scenic out-and-back rather than a continuous through-road.

Difficulty

BLM 74 - West confidently earns a Level 1 Very Easy technical rating. The route consists of an exceptionally flat, smooth, and easily navigable red dirt two-track that provides an effortless "easy rolling" experience from start to finish. Because the terrain is entirely devoid of deep erosion ruts, steep off-camber sections, or complex rock obstacles, it is highly accessible for virtually any vehicle. Standard 2WD passenger vehicles, AWD crossovers, and larger RVs or low-clearance camper trailers can confidently navigate this road during dry conditions. The only significant geographical barrier is the deep washout in the gulley at the end of the line, which physically halts travel and safely dictates your turnaround point.
