Trail Overview

If you're looking for a fun trail with amazing views of massive lava fields this is it. You will be riding through forested areas with some very large meadows that boast of great flowers in the spring. This is a fun trip as the variety of scenery is impressive. The bonus is you can also include a trip to a great burger stop during the summer months, the Burger Barn near Panguitch Lake. A second must-see is Miller Knoll (BLM32118), a very short side trail that takes you to a 9,000' peak with some fantastic views of the surrounding area. This is generally a wider forest service road with some narrower areas. It travels through some fantastic wooded area with abundant wildlife so keep your eyes out. This is also very close to Mammoth Cave so the two can be easily combined.

Difficulty

The trail is a forest road with some areas that are steeper, rocky, and can be rutted. In general, this is normally a passable route by most off-road vehicles. This is dirt so it does get muddy and can present challenges during periods of rain or other moisture. The ride up to Miller Knoll is the steepest trail mentioned in this posting and could be a challenge for less capable vehicles.

History

This trail highlights the magnitude of volcanic activity in this region during Earth's creation. Panguitch Lake is a caldera with some areas essentially bottomless. The extent of the lava fields and their size is nothing short of breathtaking.
