Trail Overview
The Francis Marion National Forest is located north of Charleston, South Carolina. It is named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, known to the British as the Swamp Fox. It lies entirely within the Middle Atlantic coastal forests ecoregion. The park is also entirely in a subtropical coniferous forest. This route is one of the primary access roads on the northern side of the National Forest. Most of the route follows the top of a high berm with swamp lands on all sides. Many muddy potholes after heavy rains can turn into slick mud. The route has two large open fields along that way that offer opportunities for wildlife watching.
