FSR198 - Callum Road

Trail Overview

This trail, like many others in Francis Marion National Forest, traverses the upland hardwood forest, where wildlife is often spotted. It starts at one of the Palmetto Trail intersections and runs parallel to it for most of the way. The road is flat, with occasional muddy puddles, but there are no major obstacles. Unfortunately, Francis Marion National Forest has been littered with trash in recent years. Please do your part to Tread Lightly and pack out any extra trash you find along the way.

Difficulty

The trail is a single vehicle wide with a few narrow sections. Along the way are random muddy holes that are shallow, but can catch you off guard if traveling too quickly. The 100' around Litchfield road is the worst section of the entire route with deep uneven muddy holes.

History

The Francis Marion National Forest, situated north of Charleston, South Carolina, bears the name of the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, who was dubbed the Swamp Fox by the British. It is nestled within the Middle Atlantic coastal forest ecoregion and is characterized by a subtropical coniferous forest.
