Trail Overview

This scenic gravel road is called Summerson Mountain Road at the South end where it's accessed via the paved road of the same name and, aptly, is at the peak of Summerson Mountain. As it enters Sproul State Forest, it's designated as Pfoutz Valley Road. It gently climbs for most of that length through nice, dense Pennsylvania forest to Greenlick Vista at about 2200 feet. Some of the trees need to be trimmed back by DCNR for this vista to measure up, but it's still a very pretty forest drive! Take advantage of the pullouts to stop and have a snack and enjoy your surroundings. From the vista, the track sheds elevation down to Beaver Hollow and winds over to join Sandy Run Road. ATV are permitted on most of its length, so be sure to watch out for these smaller vehicles.

History

Pfoutz Valley is named after Simeon Pfoutz, the first known white settler in the Kettle Creek watershed in the early 19th century. Pfoutz, a Pennsylvania Dutchman, settled the valley, built its first sawmill, and established a family whose descendants remained prominent in the area. Before European arrival, the valley was a rich hunting and fishing ground for Native Americans. The earliest routes in the region, like Pfoutz Valley Road, were merely widened Indian paths and packhorse trails that settlers later improved for wagons and trade, shaping the region's transport network.
